Dr. Shah Faesal is an Indian civil servant from Jammu and Kashmir. He became the first citizen from Kashmir to top the Indian Civil Services Examination in the year 2009, and the first candidate from Kashmir in several years to be selected to the Indian Administrative Services through open merit. He also holds an MBBS degree from Jhelum Valley Medical College, Srinagar. On Wednesday, January 9th, 2019, he resigned from Indian Administrative Services in recognition of such intense killings in Kashmir and criticism of Indian Muslims.
Shah Faesal cracked the Union Public Service Commission examinations in the year 2010, but has kept a low profile in the years that followed. Shah Faesal said that his act of resignation is a small act of defiance to remind the Central Government of it’s responsibility towards Jammu and Kashmir. He also said that he is not planning to join any political party at the moment but media reports claimed that he was likely to join former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s National Conference. Shah Faesal also said that he doesn’t believe his decision will discourage the youth aspiring for civil services as he did not resign out of frustration but to fight for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
During a press meet held in Srinagar, Shah Faesal accused the Central Government of promoting ‘culture of intolerance’. Shah Faesal also said that he is considering to fight the next parliament elections. In one of his interviews, he said that he is inspired by the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in politics. He slammed the Central Government for failing to ensure the homecoming of Kashmir Pandits saying that the state of Jammu and Kashmir is incomplete without them.
