The second qualifier of IPL 2019 was played between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings at Visakhapatnam witnessed one of the funniest moments in the history of IPL when a terrible display on the field saw the Delhi Capitals make a complete mess of a golden run out opportunity. Both the batsmen were strangled midway down the pitch but the comedy of errors from the Delhi fielders saw the batsmen sneak in an overthrow instead of one of them heading back to the pavilion. It all happened during the first over of CSK’s run chase when Trent Boult was bowling his opening over to Faf Du Plessis.
Du Plessis tapped the ball into the off side and called for the run before changing his mind after taking a couple of strides forward. Shane Watson however, was more than halfway down the 22 yards looking for the single and was trapped midway down the pitch as Axar Patel fired the throw at the non striker’s end. Later, the throw was collected by Collin Munro, who chose to fire in a wayward throw towards the wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant at the opposite end instead of going for the stumps himself. Pant made a diving effort to stop the ball but missed and there was enough time for the batsmen to sneak in the extra run.

Young All-rounder Axar Patel had his hands on his head and every DC player in the middle was left astonished with the shambolic effort which could have seen them take the upper hand in the run chase. The early wicket of Watson could have put the defending champions on the back foot chasing 148 in a knockout game. It was however not to be as the duo stitched an opening partnership of 81 in 10.2 overs with both batsmen reaching their respective fifties to turn the game in favour of CSK, who ended up this winning by 6 wickets to progress into the finals of IPL 2019.
